Pleasures in Paradise

Pleasure #1:  Spontaneous Pleasures

When in Puerto Morelos, do as Puerto Morelosians do.

Here in Puerto Morelos, I’ve learned Monday is same as Thursday and friends prefer to just drop by for spontaneous outings and dinners.

Time is boundless in Puerto Morelos ~ dates are almost irrelevant and its location is paradise.

My friends burst into Casa Lalita and trumpeted, “Let’s go!  We’re going to the Cenote!”

Ahhh, swimming in the womb of mother earth with the stalactites, bats and the healing water… Not too shabby as my first experience in Mexico don’t you think?

Pleasure #2:  The Jungle

The creatures of the jungle and the sound of the jungle in the blackness of the night is astounding!  I’ve never seen a flock of vultures and experience such respect for a monkey and felt such reverence for the beauty of a snake before in my life!

Pleasure #3:  Fish Pleasures

Nothing beats buying fresh fish from the dock and sharing it with good company!

Friends + Fish = Fun!

Pleasure #4:  Freedom of Expression

Puerto Morelos encourages freedom of expression and allows you to be who you are. Some locals call this house the Gaudi house.  Apparently the owner didn’t have a plan for the house but allowed the house to be built organically as it wanted to be built.

Pleasure #5:  Siesta any time you want ~ anywhere you want!

These roaming dogs of Puerto Morelos teach us to enjoy life ~ do what you want when you want.  They roam free and just plop down when they need a rest ~ some even take a rest smack in the middle of the road.  Cars simply drive around them.

Pleasure #6: Tuning into the Moon

Tuning into the cactus that only blooms beautiful white flowers only during the full moon.

Pleasure #7: Mindfulness

Almost all rooftops in the Yucatan Peninsula have a water tank on the roof of the buildings.  The water is pumped up to the roof of the house and into the water tanks.

When you take a shower, the water pressure is created naturally from gravity.  When these tanks empty, you wait for it to fill up again.

Being raised in big cities from the moment I was born, water source and water waste was never something I had to think about.  Mexico provided an opportunity for me to connect to the earth in a more intimate way.  I became keenly aware of how much water I used and wasted.  Simple mindfulness developed as I paid attention to cause and effect of living.

Pleasure #8:  Walking with my head in the cloud ~ a.k.a. Cloud Gazing

Coming from New York, the first thing that stood out in Puerto Morelos was the vast unobstructed sky.  Every day the clouds form masterpieces up in the sky for all to enjoy.

Pleasure #9:  Better than Fireworks!

I have never seen such spectacular fireworks of nature!  Lightening strike right, left and center out on the horizon of the Caribbean Sea!

Pleasure #10:  Gliding like the Pelicans

Pelicans glide without flapping their wings as far as the eye can see.  Gazing at these amazingly beautiful creatures, it dawned on me that I too am gliding like the pelicans.  I remember the days where I had to flap my wings very hard to weave through life’s challenges.   Although new challenges present themselves, meeting it with awareness and ease have developed.   Learning to live life fully and savoring each moment creates the wind underneath my wings.  Thank goodness for all the guides and angels in my life!

Pleasure #11:  Simplicity

Enjoying the simple things in life like the sea breeze gently caressing my toes and the wind briskly lifting off the grains of sand from the dunes of my feet.

Pleasure #12: Yoga at the dock

Weekly yoga at the dock with my crab friends were some of my most peaceful moments in Puerto Morelos.
