Puerto Morelos is set along the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula in the state of Quintana. This small fishing village is enclosed and protected by a Caribbean reef system composed of coral, seagrass and mangrove eco-sedimentary systems.

Located in Puerto Morelos is one of the most important Universities of Mexico called UNAM, the National Autonomous University of Mexico. A branch called Institute of Marine Sciences investigates various parts of the reef system. Their study includes the lives of the diverse plants and animals that inhabit the reef system. An in depth study of the reef influence, protection and collective physical structure in the coastal and oceanic environments is explored.

Crococun Zoo in Puerto Morelos protects and promotes the conservation of species – espcially crocodiles. The zoo Educated and inspire people to become aware of animals and their habitats in the natural environment. Their subjects include plant, marine, land and endangered species.
